What 20 Minutes Can Do

The other day my mom started a workout while juggling a mental to-do list in her head. She was moving, but she wasn't really there. I asked, “How much time do you have?” She said, “20 minutes.”

We set a timer and made a simple agreement: for these 20 minutes, she would give her full attention to exercise. When every moment pulls at us, it's easy to be present for nothing. Setting a boundary of time allowed her to show up fully for herself, her body and workout. The distractions eased, she moved with more energy, and the workout became more enjoyable.

 

One of the biggest obstacles we face is that the busyness of modern life scatters our attention, yet our energy is finite. Protecting a desginated window of time is like reclaiming your own energy. This works for anything—meditation, a nap, a walk, a workout. Giving yourself a set amount of time creates a clear boundary, which allows for more presence and productivity. Even a short window of focused attention can transform the experience.
