Oprah Taught Me the Secret to Sunday

Years ago, I discovered Oprah's secret to maintaining balance and inner peace—giving herself the gift of Sundays.

In her book, "What I Know For Sure," she shared how she dedicates the day to just being, rather than constantly doing. She “piddles.” This simple practice has since become an essential part of my life, and may enrich yours as well.

She writes: ”Giving yourself time to just be and not do is essential to fulfilling your mission as a human being. I give myself Sundays. Sometimes I spend the whole day in my pajamas, sometimes I have church under the trees communing with nature... most times I just do nothing—piddling, I call it—and let my brain and body decompress from six days of nonstop mental bombardment. If I didn't do that, I would implode, literally, in a crazy psychic breakdown. And whenever I've slipped up and missed a Sunday, I've noticed a definite change in my disposition for the rest of the week."

Let's take a cue from Oprah’s wisdom and embrace the art of piddling ourselves. This doesn't necessarily mean adopting her exact routine, but finding our own version of rejuvenating downtime.

I encourage you to create your version of piddling—whether it's a relaxing morning with your favorite book, a walk in nature or simply spending quality time with yourself. Allow your mind and body to rest, as it will set the tone for a more fulfilling week ahead.

Take time to pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of just being, without the pressure of constantly doing. Celebrate the small moments that bring you joy and embrace the precious gift of time.
