Nourishing Wisdom From My Grandmother's Kitchen

Growing up, my grandmother always used to say, "Let's get you kids some nourishment!" I love that phrase because it implied that we weren't just eating to eat, but that we were doing something beneficial for our bodies.

In today's overwhelming food world, we hear a lot about nutrition – the vitamins, minerals, proteins and carbohydrates that our bodies need to function. While nutrition is undoubtedly important, it only tells part of the story.

Reflecting on my grandmother’s loving words, I appreciate the deeper meaning behind the word nourishment, which encompasses so much more than simply fueling our bodies with food. It's about feeding the whole self—mind, body, and spirit, and finding joy, satisfaction, and deeper connections through the foods we choose.

Exploring how we can eat in a way that is not just good for the body, but actually nourishing, invites us to consider the mindset we bring to the table when we sit down to eat. Perhaps the next time you have a piece of freshly picked food, take a moment to reflect on how the sun, the earth, and the universe came together to create this nourishing sustenance. As you eat, savor the connection between yourself and the universe, and appreciate the nourishment it provides.
